The tale of two harvests—that is how everyone referred to the 2022 Vintage. Characterized by a record-breaking heatwave, heavy rainfall, and a unique combination of factors, this vintage was seen as excellent by some and extremely challenging by others.
The vintage marked a return to normal rainfall totals, with over 18 inches of rain breaking the three-year drought. Steady rainfall continued into the early months, and after a warm spring, bud break and flowering occurred slightly earlier than normal. The summer progressed in classic Napa Valley fashion—dry and warm—and the ample water levels led to healthy, well-developed canopies, unlike the previous two vintages. However, heat spikes occurred in strong waves, and late rain during the season had a significant impact, marking the two harvest times depending on when the grapes were harvested.
As we move forward with our wine development and growth, we also want to share images of our lifestyle—the soul of our brand. For this, we have chosen a local photographer and dear friend who shares his life here with us in the valley and possesses the adventurous eye needed to capture the scenes of our day-to-day existence. Rob Watermeyer, born in South Africa and a wine advocate, has traveled the world photographing wild places and has decided to raise his family in this beautiful valley of ours.
The images for Blacktail are titled “Fun in the Game,” as this key on our craft. For the Cabernet Sauvignon, the selection was “On the Road,” which is key for our trade. As we continue doing this for you, we thank you once again and look forward to sharing more of what we do… all driven by love.
Safe journeys,
