It is common knowledge that vines “need to suffer” to produce great wines. This theory was put to the test in 2021, when we had virtually no precipitation for the entire growing season. The vines at our Pope Valley ranch searched deep for the resources they needed to set a crop. Shoot growth was limited, and the resulting crop consisted of small clusters of tiny berries. With the warm, dry summer, harvest arrived early, allowing us to capture the grapes at the peak of aromatic development, flavor intensity, and natural acidity. The finished wines are balanced, nuanced, and full of complexity.

The 2021 Cervantes Cabernet Sauvignon MMXXI shows the balance and discretion we are looking for in our wines. A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Malbec, and 6% Petite Sirah, it is ripe with raspberry, blueberry, and boysenberry notes and surrounded by aromas of flint, sage, chocolate, and incense. The tannins are rounded- ed by aging for 20 months in 50% new French oak barrels, providing a soft texture and a framework on which the wine’s character is built. Proportionally, this wine expresses everything we love about our beloved land in this far corner of the Napa Valley, and should age for many years in the bottle. Hedonistically, it is incredibly satisfying, especially when enjoyed with friends and family around a table.

Vintage notes

After the wildfires, the 2021 Harvest was a blessing in many ways, but not without challenges. The vintage was marked by winter and spring drought. Rainfall was less than one-third of the annual average in Northern California, making the growing season stressful for most growers, even those with access to water like us. The fact is that the soils need the rain to fully recharge and feed the vines. The result was small fruit and low yields in the vineyards.

The good news. Weather-wise, it was an excellent year. Spring was mild, summer was warm but moderate, and fall gave a longer period for the grapes to mature. The great news is the resulting crop had small berries with ripe tannins and great concentration. Winemakers are claiming the best vintage in recent memory.Definitely, 2021 is a high-quality vintage.

Presenting these wines after skipping a vintage means a lot to us. The battles, lessons, and experiences over this period are valuable to us and were rewarded with a beautiful vintage. Sometimes, stress pays off to excel. 2021 is an outstanding vintage, solid and well-structured, producing wines that will age over 30 years or more. We hope you love these wines as much as we do. It has been a pleasure crafting them.

Safe journeys,
